‘Foreign affairs” is such kind of cadre service in the BCS where only eligible candidatesget chance through their endless efforts, sacrifice and over all dedication. To get chance in foreign affairs a candidate has to possess some specific qualities covering the areas of complete addressingabout himself, his upazila, district, division and above all the present status of the country in the international arena especiallyin the UN, OIC, SAARC, BIMSTEC, NAM and in many other alliance in which Bangladeshis working restlesslyto bright the image of its own to the international communities especiallybelonging to donar organisations including IMF, WB, USAID, JICA, ADB and IDB, foreign policy, different missions of Bangladeshin abroad, having a crystal-clear knowledge on the status and functions of a diplomat, broad knowledge on the current issues across the world, climatic hazards like global warming or green house effect, earth-quake, exporting products of the country especiallythe garments sector coupled with remittanceand FDI, having a sharp knowledge on map-pointing including rivers, oceans, countries, continents, mountains, lakes, seas etc, having diplomaticknowledge on geo-politics, having inns and outs of economic and military alliance with their full history, memorizingthe name of capitals and currenciesof all countries across the world and above all smart and precise answer with relevant data with pleasing voice which surely would be helpful to score a outstanding marks to reach to the top of success.
So you breezed through BCS preliminary and written test? Great! You are only a few yards away from your ultimate success; and to reach there you have to score good marks in the viva voce. For that, consider the following tricks and techniques. There is one thing do not forget before I am giving you some tips. That is find your own tips and your own ways to approach before going to any viva or interview. It all depends on the impression you create in your first encounter that matter most. What are the necessary things you should master is more or less known to you i.e. your appearance, confidence, speaking power etc. What I will do here will mention the old things newly so that you can check it again. The most common dilemma a BCS candidate faces about viva is — There is no solid syllabus for viva, what the hell should I study, then? What if I run into a tough viva board who will ask everything out of my knowledge? To make you feel comfortable I want to say -- Dear friends, the above-mentioned thing has happened before, and it will happen in your time too and for the other competitor as well! What will you do then? Don’t worry too much and hamper your preparation. You passed two hard and competitive exams i.e. BCS Preliminary and Written Test. These two exams are surely toughest competitive exams of Bangladesh. You came out successfully from the two hard battles. You are only a few yards away from the crown to achieve! That is the point where you can feel confident than ever you were! You passed the exams not out of any generous help from anybody, nor you are selected out of pity, nor do you reached this stage winning a lottery. You had to go through a tough battle and you did it. Follow the same track again. Study hard! That should be your policy again! If you prepare hard then this kind of situation might be hurt by some terrible question but still you will survive. There will be some easy questions even in the toughest of boards. Your preparation will help you to answer those questions in a pressure-cooker situation. Instead of failing, you will get average marks. Who knows, combining with your written score, this “average” viva score can be enough to get your desired cadre! Now the necessary question arises, What to Study? The good news is, you do not need to study anything new for the viva. So far what you have studied for the preliminary and written exam should be more than 90 percent of your viva preparation. Remember, the interviewers are not trying to see how much you know for that written exam is already there. They are going to see whether you have the good appearance suitable for a BCS cadre or not. All you need to do is to revise what you have studied and keep them in your working memory. Apart from what you have already studied, there will be some additional subjects too. I will point out those one by one. Questions that you should practice now: The following questions are the topics that are important for each and every viva board no matter what your cadre choice is. If you are in the beginning of your preparation, middle or end, please do ensure that you have good answers for these questions:-
Describe Yourself: It will be asked to break the ice, to start the conversation. You might be asked to tell the meaning of your name in Bangla or English, famous personalities of the same name.
If you are asked why you are choosing civil service do not give a typical answer. Give a strong and logical answer of your own. Do not memorise the answer from the guide book. These are all given by many others. If you want to differentiate yourself from the majority you have to give your own unique answer. You might be asked if you do not get your desired cadre what you will do. You will be asked to relate your cadre with your academic background. Suppose you are from Chemistry, how you will relate with foreign affairs? Another related question is, why not other cadres? What is your hobby? — is another typical question which exposes your personality to the board. You can also be asked about your family. Be careful, and answer to the point. You might be asked to tell about your memorable happenings. You will be asked about your favorite personalities. Here do not choose a questionable character. Better choose a person who is more or less accepted by all. It is same with your favourite books, writers, actors or actresses. Another typical question is about your home, hometown or birthplace etc. Remember the rivers, famous places, personalities and Liberation War history of that place. What are the problems and possibilities of that place and how can you solve the problems there? Have your answers prepared. If you are made the chief of your cadre how you will develop your department and increase the efficiency level? It’s a common question but you should satisfy the board with good answers. The courses you studied and department or faculty you belong to is your basics. You should have a good command over the very basics of your department if not excellent. Liberation War is our glorious part of history. And a few countries of the world sacrificed so much as ours. We should have a good reading over the history of our Liberation War not only for our exams and viva only rather as a citizen of this country. Another related question will be on the ruling party. In a democratic system a party remains in the government and others in the opposition. You should respect the government and know the details of the ruling party. To check your updates they will surely ask you on any current issue or ongoing debates. Don’t forget to keep you updated all the time. Everyone of you might be worried about your dress code, isn’t it? In winter suits are better but in this hot summer do not let yourself flooded in the sea of sweating! For female, be as gentle as possible. Do not wear any offensive dresses. For males, keep your hair trimmed, be well shaved and have a confident look on your appearance. Keep your body posture smart all the time and have a warm handshake at the end. Last but not the least, it is natural you can not answer all the questions, but remember confidence does not come when you have all the answers rather it comes when you are ready to face all the questions.
Describe Your Self –এ প্রশ্নটা ইংরেজিতে হতে পারে-এখানে একটু creative হোন -Prepare some different sentences to impress the board
Know thyself: At the very first of BCS viva, the interviewer try to make the candidate easy. That why, they question about the candidate. These questions includes-
** Introduce yourself?
** Say something about your district/upazila/village.
** Which University have you read? What is the name of the VC of your University?
** Whom do you love most and why?, etc.
Answering these questions are easy. Every candidate takes their preparation on topics related to him. Answering these questions smartly increases the impression of the candidate. Though introductory conversations are not the main part of viva, it creates an impact on total viva. So, if you want to start smartly, you must know yourself.Build Self-confidence
Both confidencelessness and over confidence are harmful for any sort of viva. But you must have to have a marginal level of confidence. The matter is, confidence does not create automatically. Confidence has to be created. You have to know those minimum things which a general candidate should know. If you know how much you know, you confidence level will automatically rise.
Take preparation according to your choice list:
After the introductory conversation, the board move forward to ask the real questions for judgement. These questions normally starts with the cadre choice that the candidate had made in his choice list. Pattern of viva differs by the change in the cadre choice list. For example, viva of a candidate whose first choice is BCS (Administration) and whose choice is BCS (Foreign Affairs) will not be same. You have to take preparation according to the choice list. This will save your time and energy during the preparation. Give importance to the first three cadre choices.
Try to be unique
There are some common questions asked in the viva boards. And, for many questions there are no definite answer. For example,
** Why have you chosen BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre?
** Why you want to come for BCS?
** How will you serve your country, if you become a BCS (Administration) Cadre?
** Why have you chosen general cadres, while you read a technical subject academically?
In all BCS viva guides, these questions are answered. Please don't memorize the answerof these questions. The interviewer will realize that what you are saying are the words of guide. Try to take answer of these questions based on your your position and your thought.
Be Specific:
Most of the times candidates read a lot of things sporadically and superficially, and finally fail to answer questions specifically. This happens because of the candidates shallow knowledge. In the viva board, you have to be very specific in answering questions. This will prove your self confidence and create positive impact on the board. While answering questions, you have to avoid `may be/ I think/ probably/ so far I know' etc phrases as far possible.
